Artist statement

My artwork reconfigures the human body, exploring intersections between flesh and bone, vitality and mortality, love and heartbreak. Through detailed graphite and charcoal drawings, as well as digital designs for stickers and clothing, I create creepy, perplexing, and surreal images.

The process begins with a vision, usually of graphic scenes generated through subconscious thoughts and emotions. This is followed by carefully constructing reference images to refine my ideas. I photograph my own body or use skeleton models to compose the scenes that populate my mind. The result is artwork that captivates and unsettles, immersing the viewer in a space where human form and expression are both familiar and hauntingly estranged.

My intricately detailed, eerie drawings juxtapose human figures with skeletal forms. The meticulous rendering of the figures allows them to come to life, eliciting a sense of empathy from the viewer. I blur boundaries between the living and the nonliving, and what belongs inside and outside of the body. My drawings are realistic in their technical execution but feature imaginary characters and distorted forms that transcend reality. In my graphic design work, such as hoodies and stickers, I carry forward themes of vulnerability, unexpected juxtaposition, and sick aesthetics that are both cool and disturbing.

The work invites viewers to confront raw emotions and consider both the universal pain and beauty of existence, reimaginations of the body, and the unseen qualities that bind us. At its core, my art is an exploration of what lingers beneath the surface, both physically and emotionally, literally and metaphorically. It is an attempt to give form to the intangible, to confront the darkness within, and to leave viewers suspended between discomfort and fascination.

About the Artist

My name is Emy Gunn. I recently graduated from CU Boulder with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and minors in Art Practices and Sociology. I've lived in Colorado my whole life, and I enjoy making art, spending time with friends, skiing, snowboarding, lifting, camping, listening to music, and going to raves.

I first proclaimed myself as an artist in middle school when I discovered my passion for photography. Popular apps at the time, such as VSCO and Tumblr, inspired me to experiment with visual aesthetics. When I got my first DSLR camera, my thinking shifted, and I started viewing the world through frames that captured something beautiful. I mostly photograph nature and landscapes, but I love taking pictures of friends and family when given the opportunity. I have also experimented with videography and editing videos.

I started drawing when I took an art class in high school, and I found that the medium came very naturally to me. During the pandemic, I created more drawings and realized it's something I have a knack for.

Now, as I pursue a minor in art practices, I am just getting started with exploring my skills and building up a portfolio. The art I make varies in subject matter and medium. I'm interested in creating more art that implements human anatomy, fear, pain, heartbreak, and love. I strive to develop hyper-realistic drawings and abstract digital work that pushes me out of my comfort zone. I want to make art that evokes strong emotions and satisfies the visual cravings of my audience. I plan to continue taking photos and drawing. I would also like to spend more time creating digital art, editing videos, and designing clothes.
